What is it about growing up that makes you want to learn more? I get a little flutter of delight every time I find out something new now.
And properly learning new stuff is a whole different ball game now.
I didn’t dislike school, college or university, but I hated being forced to study subjects I had no interest in. I actually started to do much better when I was able to choose my own subjects. My law degree results were based solely on my third year work because it was such a huge improvement on what I did in year one and two! And it was the only year I chose all the subjects I studied rather than having compulsory subjects.
It also has something to do with me putting stuff off. I’m excellent at procrastinating and then going all guns blazing at the last minute.
There’s a quote I love about procrastination and it’s so true, well in my case anyway. ‘If it weren’t for the last minute, then nothing would get done’
It’s funny though, after I finished all my training; GCSEs, A levels, degree, a legal practice diploma as well as the on the job training, I said never again.
I’d had enough studying to last me a lifetime.
I entered my adult years studying. I didn’t want to waste any more time doing it. I wanted to earn money and have time to enjoy myself. I didn’t want to be up until 3am in the morning writing assignments any more.
How wrong I was.
Eight years on, I have two more diplomas, lots more training and a career change under my belt and I’m now always thinking about what I can do next.
How I can learn more.
Bolster my education.
Before I’ve even finished one training course I’m already planning my next. Well, in my head anyway, (I’m not that organised!)
I do have to complete continuing professional development every year as part and parcel of my job but I can bank CPD points and I’m already a couple of years ahead of myself because I’m so eager to learn.
I often wonder why I didn’t feel the same about learning in my younger years. Why, as an adult, education seems far more appealing now, and why training courses are now something I actually book with excitement rather than a roll of the eyes.
Well I think it’s because I’ve finally found out what makes me tick.
I’ve discovered what I enjoy doing and learning and because of that I’m all the more keen to do it!
What about you? Do you enjoy learning more as a grown up?
