How to have sweet dreams

September 29, 2013 by Kate Leave a Comment

Sleep is so important. We spend a huge proportion of our life doing it. Or trying.

Especially when we have kids.

Sleep is the one thing that we definitely take for granted, until we don’t get it anymore.

We had two children very close together.

Lil Man was a terrible sleeper until Lil Miss arrived, then she took on the job of keeping us up all night instead!

We did wonder whether the solution to getting her to sleep better was to have another baby, but we figured we could be going for years until we finally got a good sleeper and we’d end up with a ton of mouths to feed and no guarantee of any more sleep!

Thankfully Lil Miss has finally taken mercy on us and our undereye suitcases. Our nights are now much more restful. (I have probably jinxed us now. Sorry hubby!)

The difficulty we have now is that Lil Miss is at the stage where she needs a big girl bed. The bed is the easy part. She loves the one we bought Lil Man not so long ago, so we’ll probably just go with the same, then there’s no arguing! And we won’t have to spend forever debating which one.

The tough part, however, is choosing the mattress. When we were searching for Lil Man’s new bed I was surprised to discover how many different types of mattresses there were and the range in price. It’s huge!

It’s very difficult to find a decent one in an actual shop (so that you can try before you buy) without it costing the same as a small house!

So the answer is to shop online. But where do you start with that? I was worried about buying one for Lil Man when we hadn’t had chance to try it out. Even more so now with Lil Miss, especially when she’s only just started to settle into a good sleeping pattern & seems to have gotten used to her current mattress. I really don’t want to upset that now!

I do wish that we could fit a double bed and a double mattress in her room as that would lessen the possibility of her falling out, which she does quite frequently, but her room is pretty compact so a single will have to do!

Anyway, here’s what we found important when shopping online for a mattress for Lil Man:-

• It MUST have memory foam. Any mattress worth it’s salt nowadays has memory foam. Never forget, there may be occasions when your child sneaks into your bed and rather than risk waking them you sneak into their bed. It has to be comfy for them, but it also has to be comfy for you too.

• Good quality mattresses all seem to have deep spring bases. I don’t know why that is. But the more expensive the mattress, the deeper the springs, that’s what we found trying out the ones we could in the shops. Just make sure you have fitted sheets with deep corners to go with it!

• Read the reviews. When it comes to items like this, it’s really important. There are some you will need to take with a pinch of salt, but the mattress we bought for Lil Man was exactly as we expected from the reviews we read. For example, if someone complains it’s bouncy then it’s probably quite a soft mattress. That might be fine for a child but wouldn’t be for an adult with back problems. So read them!

So, I just have to follow my own advice and all will be fine.

I hope!!
